Properties of lubricant
Properties of lubricant
A good lubricant generally possesses the following characteristics:
I. high boiling point (it is the temperature at which a liquid change to a gas (vapor) at normal
atmospheric pressure) and low freezing point (temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid) in
order to stay liquid within a wide range of temperature. [Note that, boiling point of water is 100°C
and freezing point of water is 0°C]
II. high viscosity index
III. thermal stability (it is the ability of a fluid to resist breaking down under heat stress)
IV. corrosion prevention (refers to the solutions used in industries to prevent the
depletion/consumption of the physical, mechanical and chemical properties of a material that is
normally caused by corrosion)
V. high resistance to oxidation
